Loose handle on teapot

I have an older teapot with wooden disks in the handle - I'm told these are to keep the heat from getting to the handle - that have loosened. I suspect the wood has shrunk through age. Any ideas what I can do to tighten the handle so the pot can be used?

If the pins are in place, best to leave it alone. Insulators were generally made from materials that did shrink in time, the handles get wobbly, but by and large, it is nothing more than an annoyance and the pots can be used as they are.

I wonder if simply applying a bit of wood polish would cause the disks to swell a little and thus tighten the handle; it couldn't do any harm.
