Does anybody know what the B means at the beggining of the marks? I have identified the others as James Deakin and Sons, Sheffield, England, 1903. But the B is really confusing me. I am in Australia, but I recieved it from my mum, who is German, so could it be an import mark of some sort?
I think it is a trinket box of some sort but am not sure. Any other ideas??

Can't help with the mysterious B mark but would like to point it out
that the Assay office mark, second from the right, is a Chester one,
much sought after nowadays as it is closed now.

As the previous poster said, this is a Chester hallmark. In this case for 1903. The letter “B” is most probably a Journeyman’s mark. There were often many silversmiths working in large workshops, and they all had individual marks which they stamped on their work to identify which individual made the piece.

There is a problem with the Deakin attribution, as they didn’t actually register their mark in Chester until 1908.

Ridgway & Priestley's book on Chester makers' marks identifies one the same as this registered in 1902.
