Hello - I have a silver snuffbox which has been in my possession 60 years and was my grandmother's before that. The only marks visible are the crescent and crown and the silver content - 800. Should there not be a 3rd mark for he maker. ?
Thanks you

hello ambi - one would think that a manufacturer - whether a lone smith or someone in a large workshop - would always want everyone to know that s/he had made the piece. unfortunately there are times when they do not mark their work for one of various reasons-- they are not required to do so, their punch is misplaced, they are too tired etc. and then we, who come after, have a mystery on our hands.
your snuffbox is definitely hand made, and very nicely at that. barring your finding a picture of a similar or identical snuffbox or other small silver work, the manufacturer of this piece may remain a mystery. but that does not mean that you enjoy it less, does it???
(i wouldn't even do all that much to clean it)

Hell0 - Thanks for your comments. I believe any one of your observations could apply to my snuffbox. In addition, it could also be possible that it
was made in Switzerland and sold illegally in Germany . I'm glad to hear
that you think it is hand-made.
