Spoon with AR mark.

Post by paulh »

This is a simple Old English style tea spoon with the initials AR and a very dodgy looking duty mark.

My first thought was Alexander Rollo. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Paul.

Hi Paul.

Maybe Adam Ross of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada ?
I'm thinking the 2nd drawing down in my scan.
Canadian silversmiths often used different psuedo marks during their history.

Just to add a little to Pat's information. The Incorparation of Edinburgh site has it that Adam Ross was apprenticed to William Marshall II in 1805, so if presuming he completed his term, then he must have departed to Halifax soon after.

Thanks gentlemen. An interesting idea. I had always thought it to be Scottish.
