Dear Researchers,
I will be in Dublin in January and I would like to examine certain Dublin makers’ marks of c1800 as registered with the Dublin Assay Office. The Assay Office tells me that they are not open to the public but all material is on microfilm at the National Library in Dublin.
However I am not sure which microfilmed documents I should be looking at. Is it the “List of members in Dublin city and county and in the rest of Ireland, 1784-1825” but will this have the actual marks - I believe the marks were originally struck on a copper plate. Is there a microfilm of this in the Library. Can anyone advise me? I should be most grateful. Best regards, Bruce

Hi Bruce,
I was somewhat dismayed to read your question regarding the restrictive attitude of the Dublin Assay Office as I was planning a similar trip at sometime in the future.

Dear Trev,
Thanks for that information. I suspect that it will be a case of actually visiting the National Library and seeing what’s there. The Library people on the phone are very helpful (and gave me guidance on need for identification/photos to get a reader’s ticket) but inevitably do not have the specialist knowledge to indicate what exactly is in the the material on Irish silversmiths. If I get to Dublin, hopefully in January or February, I will post here my experiences.
Best regards, Bruce
