This makers mark appears to be Alexander MacLEOD of Inverness on an 1822 Edinburgh spoon. Another website has this mark on an 1823 Edinburgh butterknife but is unattributed.

Edinburgh Assay website has him submitting work in 1837/9. The three reference books Jacksons, Scottish Provincial and Highland Silversmiths have his marks for Inverness only from 1816 to 1859.

Does anybody have information or an opinion on this mark?

Hi Paul,

Alexander McLeod was born c.1786 and admitted into the Incorporation of Inverness Hammermen on the 6th November 1827, bearing in mind that he would have aged over 40 years upon his admittance at Inverness, and would not have allowed to practice his craft in that town prior to that event, except, maybe as that of a journeyman, then this would be a strong indication of an earlier career elsewhere which is yet to be discovered. There do appear to be a few gaps in the records at Edinburgh.
