Cursive AM on a pap boat

The plain form of this pap boat suggests a mid 18th century date. The rather worn marks appear to be a cursive AM struck three times just below the rim on the back of the piece. Does anybody recognise the mark? Even if it has not been attributed, I’d be interested to know whether it has been noted on any other items.

Hi David,

Just a maybe, but Richard Turner in his Directory of Scottish Silversmiths and their Marks has note of AM being stuck three times (no photo) on a punch ladle attributed to Alexander Mollison of Aberdeen.

Although later (1834-1848) some provincial pieces, as I'm sure you are aware, can often give the appearance of being made earlier and the same skills would be required to make the pap boat and punch ladle.

Just offering this as a possibility.

Regards Trev.

Thank Trev

That certainly seems a possibility. The pap boat could well be 19th rather than 18th century. I've had it for a few years and yours is the most promising suggestion so far.

Regards

David
