Dublin hallmark - unsure about year/maker

Post by snozzle »

Hi, I would firstly like to thank you for providing such a wonderful, informative site!

Now I have a set of tongs which I am struggling with.

I think I have made out the marks as follows:
Dublin, 1820, retailer John Twycross, maker (and this is the bit that doesn't add up) J.M

According to everything I have read here the above maker J.M doesnt tie in with the date of 1820 as Joseph Mahoney wasn't around until 1847.
I'm afraid I dont have a very good camera but I've done what I can to show the marks,
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Although I haven't seen that exact mark before, the maker is very likely to be James Moore. He entered several different marks with the Dublin Assay Office and was working from 1815 until his death in 1849.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I wonder, could you tell me if there is a particular name for the pattern on these tongs?
