Post by MCB »

Robert I
He was christened the son of Robert and Miriam at St Lawrence Jewry in 1758. His father was a freeman in the Painters-Stainers Company.
He married Sarah, the daughter of Sebastian Crespel I (Grimwade p.477-8), at St Martin’s in the Fields in 1789.
They had nine children all christened at St Martin’s:
Robert in 1790 (died in 1791), Sarah in 1791, Robert again (Grimwade p.519, 749) in 1793, James in 1795, Sebastian in 1798, Stephen in 1800, Miriam in 1801, Caroline in 1805 and Henry in 1808.
Garrard & Co were first listed in the Land Tax assessment book for Panton Street in 1809. The previous tenants had been named as Wakelin & Co. From 1810 Robert Garrard was personally assessed.
Robert senior died at Panton Street, Haymarket in 1818.
His son Stephen became a solicitor and his son Henry moved to Australia. His other surviving sons joined the family business.

Robert II
He was christened at St Martin in the Fields in 1793.
He married Esther Whippy at St George, Hanover Square in 1825.
Their children Robert Benjamin in 1826, Esther Miriam in 1828, Jane in 1829, Robert in 1832 and Sarah in 1833 were all christened at Christ Church, St Marylebone. Their address was 2 St John’s Wood Road.
Their son Robert Benjamin was buried at St George, Hanover Square in 1827. The other son Robert became a Captain of the 5th Dragoon Guards, was elected to the Goldsmiths Company in 1853 and died in 1895.
Their son Benjamin Whippy was christened at St Leonard, Streatham in 1836; their address is recorded simply as Streatham. He was made free by patrimony in the Grocers Company in 1857. He joined the Garrard partnership in 1881 on the death of his father. He died 1891
The 1841 UK Census listed the family and eight servants at Woodfield House, Streatham.
The burial of his wife Esther aged 54 years was recorded at St Leonard, Streatham in 1848.
Robert II was still at Woodfield House, the address now Tooting Common, for the 1851 UK Census.
He was recorded at White House, Wokingham in 1861, at East Heath Lodge, Wokingham in 1871 and at 28 Onslow Gardens, Kensington in 1881.
He died at East Heath Lodge, Wokingham in 1881.

James
He was christened at St Martin in the Fields in 1795.

He retired from partnership with his brothers around 1835.
James Garrard aged 40 years of independent means was recorded in Margate in 1841 with his wife Emily aged 35 years.
He may also have been the James Garrard recorded living in Harrow in 1861. The UK Census for that year shows he was 64 years old, born in St Martin in the Fields and his income was from railways. His wife Emily was 54 years old and a clerk in the Admiralty.
His death was registered at St George, Hanover Square in 1870.
His Will was proved for Probate at the Principal Registry in 1870. His widow was named as Emily Jane. His last address was Pinner Place, Pinner and he had died at 1 Broad-Sanctuary, Westminster.

Sebastian
He was christened at St Martin in the Fields in 1798.
He married Harriett Eliza Fletcher at St James, Piccadilly in 1824.
He was listed in Electoral Registers at Panton Street in 1839.
The 1841 UK Census recorded him as a silversmith living with his wife Harriet at Little Priory, Highgate.
He was listed in Electoral Registers living at Putney Heath from 1844-51 and regarding property at 25 Haymarket from 1839-65
In 1861 aged 63 years, a silversmith, he and his wife aged 58 years were living at Colebrook Lodge, Wandsworth.
He died at Burlington Lodge, Cliftonville, near Margate in 1870. His Will was proved for Probate at the Principal Registry in the same year.

The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914 Volume I pages 172-5 by John Culme records the chronology of the Garrard partnerships.

From 1818 when Robert Garrard's sons Robert, James and Sebastian took over their father's business in partnership on his death they registered RG for the firm's mark. By tradition their mark was always that of the senior partner regardless of partnership changes. RG was used until Robert II's death in 1881 when James Mortimer Garrard became senior partner and registered JG in that year. This mark continued in use until James Mortimer's death in 1900 when Sebastian Henry Garrard became senior partner and SG was registered in that year (for reasons of objections to its design SG was registered again in a different form in 1901).

Summary of marks entered at Goldsmiths Hall:

Robert Garrard I traded alone from 1802-18.
The 1802 registered mark RG was used throughout.

R, J, & S Garrard (otherwise Robert Garrard & Brothers) traded from 1818 as a partnership between Robert II born 1793, James born 1795 and Sebastian born 1798.
James Garrard retired c1835.
The mark RE was registered in 1818. This was apparently in error due to oversight or misunderstanding by the cutter (Grimwade p.519).
The mark RG was registered in 1822 and used throughout.

R & S Garrard in partnership traded in 1835 as a partnership between Robert II and Sebastian.
The 1822 registered mark RG was used throughout.

R & S Garrard & Co was formed in 1843 as a partnership between Robert and Sebastian Garrard joined by Samuel Spilsbury.
Samuel Spilsbury retired in 1847 or 1848.
Robert Sewers joined Robert & Sebastian Garrard in partnership.
Robert Sewers retired in 1859.
John Peter Dexter joined Robert & Sebastian Garrard in partnership (date not known).
Sebastian Garrard died in1870 and Dexter retired in 1871.
Robert Garrard II died in 1881.
The 1822 registered RG mark was used throughout.

R & S Garrard & Co was formed in 1881 on the death of Robert Garrard II by James Mortimer Garrard (nephew of Robert II) joined in partnership by Benjamin Whippy Garrard and Thomas Warrington.
Warrington retired 1884 and James M Garrard died in 1900.
The 1881 registered JG mark was used throughout.

R & S Garrard & Co was formed in 1900 on the death of James Mortimer Garrard by Sebastian Henry Garrard (born 1869) joined in partnership by Henry C Pearson, Henry J Bell and Maurice Whippy Garrard.
A mark SG registered in 1900 was defaced in 1901 due to a crown being incorporated in the design.
Another mark SG was registered immediately.
The second SG mark was used throughout.
