Aaahhhh! I'm terribly sorry dognose, I forgot the measures. Anyway, it is 8 centimeter long (~3") and opened max. 13 cm wide (~5")

I can imagine it being used to prepare fresh fish. Other than maybe a holder/retainer of some type, I am clueless.

No, not even close but that much you are right that it has something to do with food.

I can see that it must grip something semi-solid, and then the whole thing is held in position presumably for another operation, eg. slicing/sawing.

A device for gripping corned beef when slicing?

A device to hold a flat piece of cheese during slicing /grating the piece of cheese?

Nice doing Oel that is the correct answer. It is meant to keep the cheese in place when you slice it. However, I have tried it and it is a rather "stupid" tool. It is much easier to use two cheese buttons and and the cheese slicer.
