PROVIDENCE

George E. Martin, a director of the Gorham Mfg. Co., and also of the Silversmiths Co., died, Monday, at his home, 208 Bowen St., this city. He had suffered about three weeks from a complication of bronchitis and heart weakness. Not until last Wednesday, however, did his condition give rise to a feeling of apprehension. For 51 years he had been connected with the Phenix National Bank. Beginning as a clerk, and by strict attention to duty and unswerving faithfulness, he had filled every position in the bank until he was made vice-president eight years ago, a position which he held at the time of his death. He was well known in banking circles.

What is believed to be the most unusual studio in the world, and the only workshop made from an American silo, is under construction by Erik Magnussen, a Danish artisan and silversmith, at his home on Scituate Ave., Cranston. Carrying out his idea of industrialistic art, the Danish entrepreneur is remodeling a 50-foot silo, formerly on the old Bowen farm near his new home, and when work is completed, the unusual structure will resemble nothing so much as a miniature New York skyline. The studio will be connected with Mr. Magnussen’s new home by a small vestibule, and its interior will be furnished in a style entirely unique for this country. Although by occupation a silversmith at the Gorham Mfg. Co.’s plant a Elmwood, Mr. Magnussen, the descendant of a Danish admiral, has made the building of modern furniture his hobby.

Owing to serious illness in the family funeral services were strictly private and he was buried at North Burial Ground on Thursday. Mr. Whippe, who retired from the Gorham Co.’s employ in 1920 had been in failing health during the past year but had been seriously ill only about three weeks previous to his death.

Mr. Whippe was born in Lancashire, England, in 1844, but came to the United States with his parents when only five years of age. They settled at Fall River, Mass., where he received his education and worked until 1863 when he removed to this city and took a position with the Gorham Co. in August, 1863, in its old factory on N. The heads of the various departments of the Gorham company tendered Mr. Whippe a dinner on the occasion of his 72nd birthday and presented him a valuable bronze reading lamp, designed and executed at the Gorham plant. On the occasion of his retirement in 1920 he was given a banquet at the Turks Head Club at which the officials of the Gorham Co. and department heads were present and extended their felicitations.

Mr. Whippe was a member of the various Masonic bodies to the 32nd degree having affiliation in What Cheer Lodge, Providence Royal Arch Chapter, Providence Council of Royal and Select Masters, St. Johns Commandery of Knights Templar and Rhode Island Consistory of the Scottish Rite.
