Hi!
Nathaniel Mills 1857. Is it a pendant vinaigrette? The grille missing? The inside lid is ribbed, is that for striking matches?
Best,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Regarding the ribbed surface, is this a steel insert? (with further marks underneath).

A match box would be the logical conclusion.

Hi,
To me it looks like a combined vesta case and stamp holder.

But why have the ribbed part on the inside, which would indicate that the box must be open when striking the vesta
and thus exposing the unused matches to ignition?

What is the length of the item, is it long enough to accomodate vestas?

Hi!
Thanks. It is very small, only 2.5 x 1.8cm

A similar one was sold by an American antiques dealer, please see:
(admin edit - see Posting Requirements )
This was described as a vesta case, but again that is probably just the assumption of that particular dealer. However at least we know it is not a one off item.

Hi Trev!
No I don't think so.

I see items like this one being called satchel vesta cases which leads me to believe that the extra flap on the front is just for decoration, just a thought.
