Big Fire in St.Louis
St. Louis, Dec.19. - Fire destroyed the Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Company's establishment, at Broadway and Locust street, at dawn to-day. The property was valued at $750,000, but the diamonds and most valuable portion of the jewelry were stored in a supposedly fireproof vault, which may have saved $250,000 worth of property.
The Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Company is the largest concern of its kind in the West. The fire started in the basement o fits five-story building from unknown causes. Even before the fire department arrived on the scene the flames had burst from the windows of the sales rooms and shot upward through the elevator shafts.
A score of persons who lodged on the top floors were dazed by the shouts of firemen clambering into their rooms. Several women were among the rescued, all of whom had narrow escapes.

Jewelery Clerk in Trouble
Arrested on Four Charges of Grand Larceny Last Week
St. Louis, Mo., July 9. - Victor L. Roessel, a salesman for the Mermod Jaccard Jewelry Company, was arrested on two charges of grand larceny last week, and is now in jail at the Four Courts. He admits having stolen a pair of diamond earrings and a pair of cuff buttons with diamond sets, valued at about $100.
The warrants were issued on complaint of Goodman King, manager of the jewelry company. He says Roessel stole the jewelry sometime Monday, and in checking up Monday night the loss was discovered. Mr.King accused Roessel of the theft and the latter admitted his guilt. He said poverty had driven him to commit the act, and promised that his relatives would make full restitution. But Mr. King was adamant.
Mr. King stated the jewelry had been recovered from pawnshop where Roessel had pledged it, and that it was probably worth $100. In his opinion this was not the first theft Roessel had committed. He thought all of them, however, were small, and the total would not aggregate more than $200.
Roessel explains his conduct by saying that although he had been employed in the store about two years, the salary paid him was inadequate for the support of his wife and two children. The tornado last year swept away most of their belongings, he said. His residence is at No.2616 Allen avenue.
The impression is general about the Four Courts that the loss to the firm will be made good and the prosecution dropped.
