Good evening; I wonder if anyone can help? This chain is marked both 18K, 1 AR and 333. 333 and 18K on disk and 333 on clasp. I think 333 is 8 ct but it is also clearly stamped 18K. I haven't tested it. Is that the only way. I also wondered if anyone recognised the symbols.
Appreciated as ever.
Gary
Thes hape of the mark 1 AR is the one in use before 1970. The most probable hypothesis is that it is gold 333/1000, a fineness admitted by Italian law at that time, and that the 18k refers only to the gilding.
However the 333 gold has a specific weight of about 10, while the 18 K has a specific gravity of over 15, it should be recognized also weighing it in the hands.
I asked a question at 1 AR.
If they replay to me I will post the answer here.

The 1 AR company answered my question confirming what I had anticipated
We confirm that the punching 333 corresponds to the 8 carat fineness
The 18k punching has no value since the legislation requires that the amount of metal used in the alloy must necessarily be expressed in thousandths
Uneven discoloration (oxidation) of the chain is probably caused by 18K gold plating over 8K
I.e. 18K gold plating partially rubbed off and more oxidation of 333 base. Meaning 18K stamp was not struck to deceive but indicates gold plating.
Still, misleading.
