Ladle from Mainz ?

Post by dinio »

Hi,

I have received a ladle which could be from Mainz. In fact I did not find a perfect fit with the marks in my reference books (Wyler's). Mainz town mark used to bear a wheel (or two) and at some period it also had a shield outline like the one on the ladle. But I did not find the right combination of the shielded outline, the wheel and the crown.

Does somebody know the exact period for the town mark on the ladle ? Or perhaps is it another city mark ?

Details on the maker would also be welcome in order to get a precise date for the ladle.

Here is the ladle:

and here are the hallmarks:

Thanks for your help.

Hello, most likely the maker is Aloys Kilian Maas, active in Mainz 1834 - 1868. This version of the town mark is rare. Best wishes, Bahner

Thanks a lot Bahner !
I have noticed that there is no hallmark from Mainz on the german page of this web site. Do you think that this one could be added ? If yes, who is going to insert it ?
Thanks again.

Hello, Tom would add this if he thought it was necessary. As this is quite a rare variant of the well-known wheel of Mainz, it might be interesting to document this. Best wishes, Bahner
