Old Gold Ring - Birmingham - help with maker's mark

Hoping someone may be able to ID the maker's mark on this ring? It's quite worn.
Also, I have looked at the year stamp and this appears to be W 1896. Is that correct?
And one more question. The Crown and the 18 appear in one box. Is this indicative of anything? Most I have seen are in separate boxes.
