13 Loth Candlesticks - 18th or 19th century

Post by Greenwood »

Good day all,

I've come into the possession of 2 silver candlesticks marked [13] and [G.D] or [C.D]. I've exhausted my library of references and have not been able to locate a makers mark or a definite region of manufacture. Any help in discovering the maker or the country of origin would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. they are weighted with some kind of cement/plaster beneath the base.

The seller told me they are Austro-Hungarian, but the [13] loth mark makes me think that they aren't, as to my knowledge Austro-Hungarian 13 loth silver was marked as part of a larger sign also incorporating town and makers marks. Have also consulted Marc Rosenbergs "Goldschmiede Merkzeichen", which leads me to believe they are German. However, the book does not contain a [G.D] makers mark.

Should it be [C.D] then Christianus Drentwett (late 18th century) might be a match. However, him being from Augsburg, one would assume that the Acorn town mark of Augsburg would accompany the marks, which it doesn't.

Currently a bit stuck on these.

I found this thread on this board:

With a silversmith [GD] and silver cutlery bearing the Austrian 13 loth mark. It's a different 13 than the one on the candlesticks. Perhaps this is the same maker? I am not aware of Austrian silver bearing the [13] without the Cross-Shield hallmark, but perhaps anyone can confirm this might not always be the case?

Hello!
Definitely not the same maker.
I don't know any examples to the czech silversmith from prague to use different hallmark then the 13 lot prague guild mark.
I think your candlestick is from Germany.
Best regards!

Hi Krisztián,

Many thanks for your confirmation of it not being Czech. I share your suspicion, but also have not found a G.D. german smith
