Silver tray with open places. Could this be used for sugar? Never seen a tray like this before.
It looks like the citymark of Utrecht, furthermore there is a B. The maker? Help is appreciated...

Yes, indeed Utrecht for silver of 2nd standard, town mark of Utrecht without a crown. The year letter I in a shield with a semi-circular foot could be for 1720. The maker's mark B seen 1704-...... unidentified.

The tray is marked with the B of Joan Both, (mark 283 B, page 50 of the book merken der utrechtse edelsmeden 1598 - 1740) He was active from 1710.

Yes, I noticed it too, but I do see some differences.
The book Merken der Utrechtse edelsmeden 1598 - 1740, was published by Centraal Museum Utrecht in 1970.
In the book by Karel A. Citroen, Dutch Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Marks and Names prior to 1812, published in 2008, for Joan Both is mentioned only 2 marks; IB under crown and Both. The maker's mark B is not mentioned for Joan Both but for an unidentified silversmith, active 1704......... Who has the correct answer Centraal Museum Utrecht or Citroen? I will investigate further.

Peter.
