Presentation mallet

Post by amena »

I found this presentation mallet made in Sheffield by John Round & Son in 1894 (thanks, silvermakersmark).

I did some research online and found several.
One is even in a box with a presentation trowel.

While the connection between the laying of a memorial stone and the trowel is obvious, I can't find a connection with the mallet.
Can someone enlighten me?
Thanks

Hi Amena,

Whereas the trowel represents the laying of the stones, the mallet is representative the actual carving of the stones, thus the two go together hand in hand.

Thanks, Trev.
I'd always seen, and personally used, this type of mallet (in Italian, mazzuolo) for carving wood.
I'd usually seen stonecutters use another type of mallet (in Italian, mazzetta), which has a cuboid head.
