Mace age and detail

Post by Baxter1 »

Hi I'd appreciate anyone dating this hallmark as accurately as possible. My basic research puts it at London 1811 with the maker possibly Solomon Royes of Aldgate Street. Wonder if anyone more knowledgeable would agree?

Thanks

I agree with your dating but, if you want accuracy, the assay date is between 29th May 1811 and 28th May 1812 as that is when the 1811 assay year ran.

I don't think your maker could be Solomon Royes as he did not enter his first mark alone until 1820, with his first appearance in a partnership mark in 1817. Could the mark be SH (Solomon Hougham)?

Thanks Phil.
Glad you agree on the year as it definitely looks like a upper case Q.
Solomon Royes seems to have been a junior partner or similar working with Solomon Hougham - I guess the R could be a H.

Royes was in fact apprenticed to Solomon Hougham before achieving his freedom in 1797 and also probably married Hougham's daughter (viewtopic.php?f=74&t=40550).
