Help with ID on probable Swedish Hallmark Please

Silver Brooch badge found recently when detecting in an English Field, have checked the file on this site but the hallmarkings do not seem to match what is recorded here, would be nice to find out how old this is.

Your broach was assayed in Chester, I can't be certain of the date, can you post another photograph,

I will have to try cleaning the hallmark area and do another scan as its been really hard trying to get this section to scan clear. I though the shield shape mark with the 3 dots in made it Swedish, I have got this wrong?

If you check out the British Hallmarks section on the Home Page the marks will become somewhat clearer,

Trev, I know this will sound rather stupid but I mistook the lion passant (in my ignorance) for the letter 'M', I can now see what it is, you are right, chester, the last letter is hard to make out but I am reasonably certain is an S, this would make it 1943/44 as before 1889 was 4 marks and the letter system up to 1900/01 only runs up to R, this is according to a hallmarks book I am using.

Too save me putting another query on and as you are knowledgeable about these things I have a british army silver badge my wife found two weeks ago, it has a lion passant on it only but no other marks, does this mean its just silver but nothing else?

Hi Allectus,
It would be better to post a couple of photgraphs in the British Sterling section so that a new thread can be started, as when looking at marks other factors come into play,

This could be a an undocumented mark for S Ward & Sons. Here are their documented marks as they appear in Maurice H. Ridgway and Philip T. Priestley, The Compendium of Chester Gold & Silver Marks 1570 to 1962 (Woodbridge: The Antique Collectors’ Club, 2004).

Carling, certainly looks much the same with the exception that the final S is underlined, I guess thats what you mean by the undocumented mark.

Thank you for the information. I am new on here, is there anyone who I should inform that I have a possible previously undocumented mark?

Certainly there is no official body for you to inform though the authors of the work I mentioned above do say they'd be grateful for any additional information about makers' marks in their preface.
