Henry Lamb
Market buildings, Lynn St, West Hartlepool later York Rd.
Silversmith, Watchmaker, Jeweller
.............Kelly's Directory of Durham, 1890
.....................Lamb Henry, silversmith, Market Hall buildings, Lynn St
A secondary source references “Henry Lamb appears in Slaters Directory of 1877 as a watch and clock maker in 9 Market Hall, West Hartlepool”, and apparently established 1873.

..........Kelly's Directory of Durham, 1914
..............West Hartlepool - Watch & Clock makers

Henry Lamb died on 15 August 1913, succeeded by his son Matthew was a watchmaker, jeweller and silversmith. Mathew died in the 1940’s and the shop passed to Henry Lamb, a grandson of Henry. In 1969 the business moved to York Road and in the 1980’s it left family ownership and was taken on by a John Davey. Still active into the 21st century.

The “Willcox” name was not listed in “watchmakers” in the 1894 Kelly's Directory of Northumberland.
In this Forum section, there is also a very brief reference relating to T.W. Willcox being at Market place, Alnwick in 1927. There was in fact still a jewellery shop carrying the "T.W.Willcox" name at 12 Market Place, Alnwick at the start of the 21st century.

Re: The Newcastle and North of England Trade - Information, Advertisements, Examples
Hello, in 2017 “Dognose” posted in this Forum section, the below circa 1847 advert promoting a “W.Wilson” as watch selling and watch repairing pawnbroker.
Here is an image of a pocket watch movement, possibly sold, repaired or even “made” (assembled??) by W.Wilson at 105 Pilgrim Street.
This gentleman could have been “William Wilson” with trade directory entries as below at that same 105 Pilgrim St address.
Ward's Northumberland & Durham Directory, 1850
....................Wilson William, pawnbroker, 105 Pilgrim St
Slater's Commercial Directory of Durham, Northumberland & Yorkshire,1855, Newcastle
....................Wilson Wm pawn broker, I05 Pilgrim St
Post Office Directory of Northumberland & Durham, 1858
...................Wilson Wm. pawnbroker 12 Pilgrim Street
There are a couple of earlier trade entries that could also have been him
....Directory of Newcastle upon Tyne & Gateshead, 1801
..................Wilfon (Wilson) Wm. pawnbroker, Love-lane
There is another entry in this directory though, Wilfon (Wilson) George, pawnbroker, at “ditto” from “Sandgate”.
....History, Directory & Gazetteer of Durham & Northumberland, 1827
..................Wilson William, pawnbroker, Love Lane (No other "Wilson pawn brokers" appear listed)
....Pigot & Co.'s Directory of Ches, Cumb ..., 1828-29. [Part 1: Ches - Northumb]
........................Pawnbrokers Wilson Wm., Love Lane.
In 2020 we get another Dognose post listed in this section of the Forum showing an advert circa 1909 relating to “J&E Wilson” at Clock House Pilgrim St. Newcastle.
viewtopic.php?p=180953&hilit=wilson+New ... Don%2DTyne
The question is, can the connection be identified between J&E Wilson and the business of William Wilson.
I found a little earlier advert for J&E Wilson. This is circa 1894 and the address is 12 Pilgrim St. also confirming the concern was started in 1780.
The Kelly's directory of Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North & South Shields, & suburbs 1883 adds a little more information as John and Edward Wilson pawn brokers are at 12 Pilgrim St.

We can now see John and Edward Wilson using the same business premises as Wm. Wilson had in 1858. Family possibly, but there is information lacking for the 25 years between 1858 and 1883. We can also see 12 Pilgrim St. is the street corner position with the identified High Friar Lane.
Trade directory entries go at least to 1916
Directory of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1916
.............WlLSON, J&E, pawnbrokers, watchmakers, jewellers, &c. &c. (established 1780) Clock house, 12 Pilgrim St. (Cen. 1171) third door below Blackett St; private entrances, first 5 doors in High Friar Lane
Ward's Directory of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1898
...............WILSON J. and E. pawnbrokers, watchmakers, jewellers, &c., &c. (established 1780) 12 Pilgrim Street, three doors below Blackett St; private entrances, first 6 doors in High Friar Lane.
Can you spot the difference? Not “Clock House” and they had an extra private entrance.
Kelly's Directory of Northumberland, 1894
.............Pawnbrokers Wilson John & Edward, 12 Pilgrim Street & High Friar Lane, See advert shown earlier.
Ward's Directory of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1890
...............WILSON J. and E. pawnbrokers, watchmakers, jewellers, &c.,&c. (established 1780), 12 Pilgrim Street; three doors below Blackett St; private entrances, first 6 doors in High Friar Lane.
It is an obvious guess that William and John and Edward were close family, maybe father and sons. We would like to see “Wm Wilson & Sons”, “pawn brokers” in the trade record for the missing 25 years though, would we not? Also, regarding family connections, the 1801 Wm. Wilson may of course not be the same person as the 1858 Wm Wilson. Also, Wilson is by no means an uncommon surname, even in Newcastle pawn broking.
Directory of Newcastle upon Tyne & Gateshead, 1801
...............Wilfon (Wilson) George, pawnbroker, ditto (from Sandgate)
Ward's Northumberland & Durham Directory, 1850

Kelly's directory of Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North & South Shields, & suburbs 1883
..................Pawn broker, WiIson E, Wall Knoll
..................Pawn brokers, Wilson Mrs Mary Ann, 33 St Nicolas Churchyard
Mary and Elizabeth Wilsons seem likely to have been related, but it is not proven to me.

..................John Barnett Mennie Tyneside Watchmaker
There are already 2 posts in this section of the Forum with references to J.B.Mennie, watchmaker Jeweller of Newcastle. One relates to the very early 1900’s.
viewtopic.php?p=107335#p107335
and the other relates to the 1950’s.
viewtopic.php?p=219628&hilit=mennie#p219628
Here is possibly some in-fill information. First here is a quote from the 1900's post, that headlined “G. Kuss & Sons”.
“Notice is hereby given, that the business of Watchmakers and Jewellers heretofore carried on by the undersigned Joseph Kuss and William Kuss, at Number 6, Northumberland-street, in the city and county of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, under the style or firm of " G. Kuss and Sons," has as and from the 8th day of May, 1901, been sold to the undersigned, John Barnett Mennie, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, who will alone as from the above mentioned date continue to carry on the same business under the old style or firm of " G. Kuss and Sons."–Dated this eighth day of July, 1901.
JOSEPH KUSS. WILLIAM KUSS. JOHN BARNETT MENNIE.
There was a change of address from 6, Northumberland-street but J.B.Mennie continued under the style of G.Kuss and Sons at least up to 1910.
.................Ward's Directory of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1910
............................Mennie John B. (G. Kuss & Sons) r 35 Linden rd. Gosforth
............................Kuss G. & Sons, 9 New Bridge St. Watch & Clock Makers & Jewellers (Note there was also a "Kuss & Co." at 12 Collingwood St.)
By the Ward's Directory of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1916, this had changed,
...................Mennie John B. watchmaker, &. c. 9 New Bridge St; r 35 Linden Rd. Gosforth
...................Mennie J. B. 9 New Bridge St. (Cen. 2498) Silver & Goldsmiths, Jewellers

In another directory the full name was used, “John Barnett Mennie” at 9 New Bridge St., Newcastle.
J.B Mennie appears to have been incorporated October 1928 and the firm dissolved 2002. I have an image of an advert from 1980 for J.B Mennie Ltd. quoting an address “Princess Square”, and found a secondary reference suggesting no 7 Princess Square.

That seemed to wrap up that firm, but maybe not as there seemed there was J.B Mennie in business before 1900.

There was a J.B Mennie listed in watchmaker records at Gateshead on Tyne (should really be “under” Tyne as it faces Newcastle on the Tyne’s North bank). The pocket watch key suggests a premises at 185 High Street, Gateshead. There are “Mennie” Gateshead signed, pocket watch dials on line with American movements indicating assembly/retailing but here is a movement marked “J.B Mennie” and it was in a case predating 1900.

I could not find a usefully dated Gateshead directory to confirm address or working period though.

Gross value of estate: 500.10.0
Net value of personal estate: 34.17.0
Henry Hird who appeared to set up a shop in Ambleside in competition to his family also had a possible newspaper article relating to his shop published. This article date may be 1900

On line there is an Ancestry reference suggesting Henry died in 1910 at Ulverston.
The Hird surname appears to have a higher frequency in Northern England. There was a watchmaker Henry Hird active c. 1851-c. 1869 at Ulverston and a movement, on line , signed Edward Hird, Ulverston in a 1892 Chester case. Ambleside and Ulverston are less than 25 miles apart. Also at Barrow in Furness just over 30 miles from Ambleside there was another late 19th century watchmaker Jeweller, William Hird. Normally extra information is available from trade directories, but with Barrow in Furness, a town that at that period of time was geographically classified as in the extreme North of Lancashire, I found nil entries. Lancashire trade directories are heavily skewed to the Manchester, Salford, Liverpool areas of South Lancashire.
There is a secondary source (watch forum) that offers the following from Census records:
William Hird was born in 1836. He was listed as a watch maker in 1871, a Watch Jobber (repairer) in 1881, and a Jeweller (Dealer) in 1911.
Additionally the National Trust Collection at South Lakes, Cumbria have an 8 day English dial clock in box casing, signed 'W. Hird, Barrow' in the dial centre; Single train, 4 pillar fusee movement with dead beat escapement and Hamson's maintaining power. 16 inch circular white painted dial with Roman numerals and dated circa 1880.
It is possible that William had a son in the business but with at least another occupation. Note below.
Draft conveyance
Description:
23 April 1903, between (1) John Poole, solicitor, of Ulverston and Peter Hartley, brewer, of the same, (2) John Hird, Watchmaker, of Duke Street, Barrow-in-Furness (agent of (1)), (3) Roger Fleming, retired butcher, Coniston and (4) George Fleming, butcher, Coniston (son of (3)) whereby (1) at the direction of (3), conveys a cottage near Yewdale Bridge, Coniston, with slaughter house and outbuildings to (4) for £800 (includes plan).
Date: 1903
For an extra search, I looked for W.Hird in trade directories for Cumberland and Westmoreland "old counties" adjoining the then North of Lancashire. In Westmoreland directories I did find a "Hird's" watchmaker business at Ambleside just over 30 miles to the North of Barrow In Furness. Link below -

C.B.MAZZUCCHI
........60 & 61 Hope Street, Crook, County Durham
.............Jeweller, Watch Maker/Retailer
A secondary source indicates this was likely CARLOS BORROMEO MAZZUCCHI, born in Stazzona, Como area of Lombardy, Italy, approximately 1835 and listed in the 1861 census in Crook (possible carver and guilder, clockmaker and Jeweller).
1890 Kelly's Directory of Durham
......Crook & Billy Row
Mazzucchi Chas. jeweller, 6o Hope St

The secondary source used earlier states "Carlos Borromeo Mazzucchi" died in Crook on April 8 1905, so this next directory entry would be a continuation of the business in his name or possibly in a son's name.
1914 Kelly's Directory of Durham
......Crook
Mazzucchi Charles, jeweller & toy dealer, 6o & 61 Hope St.

The pocket watch paper advertises the watch repair and jewellery part of the business but there is also the claim of silversmithing?
