Post by R ingo »

Hello,

can someone help me with this 3 spoons, most probably made in china? Were the spoons only made for tourists (souvenir spoons), or is this type usual in china too?

Kind regards,
Ringo

Hello dognose,
thank You for your help.
I know this side, but I did not know wether the marks are chinese export silver marks or regular chinese marks.
"The (chinese export silver) marks used in the years of the China Trade Period (c. 1775 - 1880) on Chinese silver made for the Western market". That means, that the spoons are from the 19th century and are no souvenir spoons made for tourists in the 20th century?

Kind regards,
Ringo

Hi Ringo,

Up unto 1937 when Japan invaded, there was a huge Europeon population in China and a very large market for Chinese silversmiths to supply these wealthy taipan types with silver that could be acquired there much cheaper than in their home countries. It from the late 19th century that we see the disappearence of the English type pseudo mark.
