Teka Brooch

Post by Amandapanda »

Hi there,

Alongside the David-Andersen brooch I've already posted, I have managed to get a good shot of the hallmarks on the back of another brooch I inherited from my grandmother. Once again, I believe this one was a gift for her bought by my father in Mappin and Webb in London, quite likely in the 80s but he's really not sure. I think it's pretty clear it says "Teka" but I can't find any info on the company or when this could have been made. The only pictures of Teka hallmarks I've found online look completely different, so perhaps someone here can tell me from the shape of the hallmark when/where this is likely to be from.

Thanks very much!

(Sorry, I haven't got a very good picture of the front of the brooch and my camera isn't with me right now!)

Thank you very much!

What a lot of information, but in all that I think I get that it was in use between 1990 and 1997? Since the store it was bought in was demolished in 1994, this really narrows it down! I assume I can't identify a particular designer with the marks here? There are no other marks I can find anywhere on it.

Thanks, Amanda

You are welcome. It appears that the company claims the mark was first used in 1938 and first used in commerce in 1969.

Oh, so it's not the registration date I was looking for then? I'm rather confused now! Never mind, looks like it might remain a mystery then!

Hi Amanda,

I've written a little bio page about Teka, which you can check out here: (admin edit - see Posting Requirements )

I'd say your piece was an earlier Teka piece, most likely 1940s, since their style changed dramatically in the 1960s and 1970s.
