Hi - can anyone help identify the maker of this large, heavy cast silver brooch. It is stamped ?30 S (presumably 830) and also has a mark of a T within a V similar to the mark of Tone Vigaland, on this site. It is also marked NM. I just wonder whether this brooch is earlier than the work of Vigaland, and whether she made or designed this type of item. The brooch is 2.5 inches in diameter. Do these brooches have any function apart from being just decorative. Many thanks - John
a varde is a pramid made by man. A varde is set up as to mark the road between 2 cities. The varde does not mark the shortest way between the cities but the optimal one.
The viking TÆNDER the varde i.e. he set up a fire. The fire can be seen at the next point and thereby signaling something. Danger most likely, but also other occations. Like the birth of a kings son.
But most likely it is danger - the enimy arrives and the hird (noble mans army=hird) is called. They where also noblemen and they called their soldiers (pessants) .
In Denmark we cal it bavne - bavne is a fire signal from a high point calling the pessants to the stronghold or meeting place. A man that did not follow the call of the bavne should be hanged from his own roof construction.
The norwegian king HÃ¥kon Adelstenfostre established around year 950 a costal defencesystem with a connected calling system of bavner.
Most likely the motive refers to a specific occation when the bavne fire was used. In this case referred as varderne tændes.
varde = a stonemade landmark - you can see from one varde to th next - thereby showing what way to go. In case fire - the fire can be seen and signalling ........but all of this does not answer your question but tells the background.
