Help on Maker of this Silver Tankard 1766

Post by mhgcgolfclub »

Help on the maker of this tankard, I know its hallmarked for london 1766, but I do not know the makers mark , I am also trying to do some research on the inscription on base, my wife did do some research about 3 years ago and all I can remember is that it may have been something to do with a land act when small areas of land were taken from the poor and given to the rich, any other help would be very grateful

Jackson's suggests W. & J. Priest (p.213), and the article on which it found this mark was a tankard, so this seems like the best bet for your piece.

I can't help you with the inscription; does it say "The Head Chippenham Oct 1767"?

thanks for your reply , this is roys wife :-) i remember now it was w & j Priest so many thanks, the inscription reads the head chippenham act which was a land enclosure act when common grazing land was enclosed , so many families could no longer keep livestock and faced starvation unless they went to work in the new industrial towns during the industrial revolution , makes me think it was done deliberately to get the workers they needed!

anyway thanks again
