An early-closing movement has been inaugurated among the retail houses in Chicago, and a petition is being circulated to close at 1 o’clock Saturdays and at 5.30 other days during July and August. As it is headed by Spalding & Co., Hyman, Berg & Co., and C. D. Peacock, it is apt to be pretty generally signed.

In C. D. Peacock's window there is a display of briar root pipes embellished with inlaid silver filagree work, done by peasants of Bosna, a division of the Austrian Empire. The pipes bring high prices and are much sought after by those who have the leisure and income to indulge in such luxuries. As examples of artistic workmanship, they have no equal in domestic made goods.

In the State St. window of C. D. Peacock & Co., this year, as in former years, at Christmas time, appeared the replica of the birth of Christ. When a number of years ago this company first put this wonderful work of art in the window, it was the topic of conversation all over the city and the newspapers were filled with stories of it. Year after year as it appears anew, the conversation is repeated and the papers give it mention. This store realizes the worth of windows and makes use of them. Crowds of hurrying shoppers bent on the task of buying Christmas gifts, pause to look at it, and some go inside to ask about it.

After a lapse of some twenty years, one of Chicago’s — one of the country’s — oldest and finest jewelry stores, C. D. Peacock, Inc., has a regular china and glassware department again. During the interim, the store has carried short lines, such as teasets, dessert plates, after-dinner coffees, and the like, but has had no open stock dinnerware or stemware. Both are being carried now, in the upper-bracket qualities, and they will be coordinated with the silverware lines in displays and in sales. The store has made a feature of selling silverware in place settings, and expects to continue the same program with the china and glass patterns.
