Sergt. Richard T. Bequelin, formerly a designer for the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., latterly an interpreter on the staff of Col. W. W. Whitesides in the army, has made the interesting discovery that by drawing lines from town to town occupied by the Americans in their advance an outline of a woman’s head is produced. He called it to the attention of Major Frank Wilbur Smith, Division Intelligence Officer, who had it issued as a record. It has been reproduced in St. Louis and other newspapers.

A. O. Grimes, of the diamond department of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., got back on the job the day after Labor Day. He has been resting with his family for the past three weeks. The party toured to northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, where he got a chance to get some excellent fishing. The Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., at 9th and Olive Sts., has recently installed a handsome bronze stand, at the outside entrance to the store. This is about five feet high, is located on the outside property line of the store and in the middle of the front of the vestibule into the store. It bears a glass-enclosed clock, similar to those often used in front of jewelry stores by which the public may regulate their timepieces. The stand, of bronze, is handsome in design and bears the initials of the firm, and altogether makes a useful means of advertising the store to the numerous passers-by on this busy thoroughfare.

Fire of unknown origin occurring among rubbish in the coal chute in the basement of the eight-story building at the north-west corner of 7th and St. Charles Sts., the new home of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., necessitated an alarm Friday morning which brought the fire department to the scene, but two sprinkler heads, which opened, held the flames in check, and it was not necessary for the department to throw any water. There was no damage done worth mentioning to the building, and none to the jewelry stock having been installed.
