NORTH CAROLINA

L. D. Giddens, Jr, a popular young jeweler of Goldsborough, enjoys quite a reputation as a skillful engraver. He displays a number of fine specimens of his handiwork at his store which are highly spoken of by visiting travelers. Mr. Giddens has recently been tendered a position in the engraving department of Tiffany & Co., New York—a well merited compliment to his ability in this line.

The problem of silver tarnish is, at last, being partially met, and the householder can look forward to a time in the near future when she can treat her silver at home against the ravages of salt, air, sulphur, acetic acid, and heat. Two announcements here recently by Tiffany & Co., and by the Silicones Division of Union Carbide Corporation indicate these firms have already made tarnish-proofing effective.

Tiffany & Co, claims its new tarnish-proofed silver is an achievement equaled only by Charles Tiffany’s introduction of the English sterling silver standard to America for Tiffany silver in 1857.

Tiffany has long been aware that silver’s tendency to tarnish is becoming more and more of a problem to its customers. After several years of research and experiment, Tiffany has invented a method of tarnish-proofing sterling silver that will keep it free from tarnish indefinitely with the same careful handling one would give fine china. A layer of material is deposited on the silver by a secret process, which will not, like lacquer, peel and chip with age. It does not change the appearance of silver, and is now available for any new silver purchased at Tiffany at an additional cost of about 10 per cent of the price of the piece.

The will of the late Katrina Ely Tiffany, wife of Charles L. Tiffany, vice-president of Tiffany & Co., was filed for probate last Wednesday in the office of Surrogate at Mineola, L. I. Under the provisions of her will, Mrs. Tiffany leaves to her husband her cottage at Point-Au-Pic, Quebec, as well as $25,000 and all her personal effects. Three friends were bequeathed $10,000 each, while $5,000 goes to each of four godchildren. Mrs. Tiffany also left $25,000 in trust to Eva Richardson, Decatur, Ga., the principal on her death to go to Bryn Mawr College for a graduate fellowship in art and archaeology.

A LONG RECORD

On the 11th inst. Edward Lester, of Forest Hill, near Newark, began his second half-century as an employé of Messrs. Tiffany & Co., of Union Square. He is connected with the Forest Hill works, being the oldest silver chaser in the employment of the firm. In commemoration of his long service his fellow employés and the executive staff of the firm combined to present him with a handsome solid silver pitcher as a token of their regard and good wishes for many more years of useful activity. The pitcher, which was made especially for the purpose, was an example of Messrs. Tiffany's best work, and exemplifies the high development of repousse work, which is the particular branch of silversmith's work on which Mr. Lester's many years of devotion to the firm have been concentrated. The inscription on the pitcher, which stands over eleven inches high, and weighs nearly four pounds, reads as follows:

"Presented to Edward Lester by fellow members of the chasing department and executive staff of Tiffany & Co.'s Forest Hill works, on the completion of his fiftieth consecutive year of service with the firm, as a mark of their esteem and regard for him as a man and associate."
