THE NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHALLENGE CUP
The cup was competed for on March 4, and was won by the Highgate men, who not only gained the first two places, but had seven runners in the first twenty. The trophy was manufactured by Messrs. Mappin and Webb, Limited, London and Sheffield.

Postal officials are helping Scotland Yard solve the mystery of the disappearance of a £5,000 pearl necklace. A £1,000 diamond bracelet that was in the same parcel mailed to Mappin & Webb at their Regent St. establishment, was delivered safely. The jewelry was posted to the Regent St. house by Bravington’s, the chain jewelers, from their King’s Cross address. The necklace was sent for restringing and the bracelet for repairs. When the parcel was opened at Mappin & Webb’s only the bracelet was inside. There is no sign of the parcel having been tampered with. The necklace contained 140 graduated pearls.

Office: 158-162, Oxford Street, W.—The company was registered December 31, 1898, and took over the business of silversmiths of the firm of the same name, while in 1902 the business of Messrs. Mappin Brothers was acquired (as from September 30). The authorised capital is £251,000 in shares of £1, £100,000 being in A shares, £50,000 in B shares, and £100,000 in C shares (all ranking equally for dividend), and £1,000 in deferred shares, entitled to participate in dividends after a sum equal to 12 per cent. per annum on the issued share capital has been placed to the credit of the A, B, and C shareholders. All the A, £3,544 B, and £93,008 C have been issued and paid up, and all the deferred shares have been issued, and £50, or 1s. per share, paid up. There are also £325,000 5 per cent. first mortgage debentures, with interest payable June 30 and December 31, and the principal redeemable at par January 1, 1919. The accounts are made up annually to December 31, and submitted in April. For the five years to 1903 the dividend was 10 per cent. per annum ; for 1904, 75; for 1905, 10; and for 1906, 74, paid quarterly. Balance-sheets are not obtainable, but this information is official. Voting power, one vote for every share of any class. Director’s qualification, 100 shares of any class.
