I wonder if anyone can identify the maker of this old Norwegian "solje" that I inherited from my grandma (born 1885). The hallmark looks like a hammer with the letter S around the handle.

Hello, according to my sources that is a mark used by Saethers (or is it Saether ?) in Oslo in the 1930ies and 1940ies. Best wishes, Bahner

Thanks a lot!
I believe you are right. Saethers usually have a teapot as their hallmark, so I didn't think of that firm, but I have found this mark in one of my books now :)

Many,
Could you possibly post a larger more detailed photo of the mark for use on the website?

Thanks, Tom

Hello
It could be Sæther - he used a hammer and S, but I have never seen that style of the mark.

Hi Tosten,
I found this mark printed along with the teapot mark on page 111 in the book "Norsk bestikk i sølv og plett"(2000). Look it up if you have that book. I think it must be the same.
