1880 Birmingham Pocket Watch

Post by kerangoumar »

This typical 1880s Victorian pocket watch belonging to my daughter has a couple of curious features:

Image
The holes indicate this case once housed an older watch that required a key, there are two holes in this lid which is engraved in two different scripts "Millidge & Sons"(merchants) and "Edinburgh"

The maker's mark is C.F - with serif, enclosed in a plain box - belongs to ? Maker's mark also is stamped on the outside.

Hi Holly,

I wonder if there is any connection here with the Edinburgh silversmith Jonathan Millidge, perhaps Millidge and Sons was the continuation of the firm.

Hello.

That is a mark used by Charles Feis & Company, 10 Bartletts Blgs., Holborn Circus, London.
Charles Feis entered his mark in London on October 9, 1876.
Charles Feis & Company entered their mark in Birmingham on July 14, 1879.

Listed in my reference as watch manufacturers and importers.
Taken over by Louis Weill & Henry Harburg by March 1883.

Hi Trev and Patrick

my daughter is going to be so pleased! she absolutely loves antiques and found this case on one of her many explorations.

(took the picture on the scanner LOL. the camera has a screw loose somewhere. was surprised at the quality of the image.)

thank you greatly - i think i will be able to get back to work now(just putting to rest a bad experience and too many pills...)

Holly
