i'm a fan of Finnish jewellery but these hallmarks have me stumped!
does anyone know who HGL is or who the Christmas tree mark belongs to? i know the Finnish crown mark and what Y7 means.
thanks!

Hi,
I've got cufflinks hallmarked like this, too, and just the same question who HGL is. So I renew this post.
Many thanks for any hint!

Christmas tree, what do you mean? The crown in a hearth is the Finnish official mark for silver. Compare it with the English lion passant.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but do I read Y7, or? That would be the date mark for 1976. 830 is the quality mark indicating 830/1000 in silver But this HGL is difficult. Anyway, it is not the silver smith's initials but a company's maker's mark". It has been used by two companies, Hopeajaloste Oy 1968-1978 and Timanttikoru 1968-1982, which one, I don't know. Both were located i Helsinki.
I'm afraid that the symbol on the front is unfamiliar to me, could be a (trade) union, an association, whatever. I, will revert to it if I find out what is symbolizes.

I have to make a minor correction. Forget Timanttikoru, cannot be it i.e. that the manufacturer is the remaining Hopeajaloste Oy (~"Silver refined goods Ltd"). The symbol is still unclear, investigating...

Hi,
thanks a lot so far. It hasn't been me who wrote that with the Christmas mark. This was a one year old post of somebody else and his pictures are gone. I just reactivated this post a few days ago because my cufflinks seem to show related marks.
Hopeajaloste Oy is a good advice. I'm still interested in the front symbol's meaning. I guess it to be something from the Masonic sector for there is hammer, yardstick (?), compasses, laurel wreath, chain, and anvil, and a letter M. The symbol is upside down on the picture.
Thanks a lot for any hints!
Best regards

i found out recently that HGL may possibly be either:
HGL, Lindström Holger, Helsinki, 1937-1968
and
HGL, Sorsa Hjalmari, Helsinki, 1937-1942

Interesting rachelw, I also noticed those two, but aren't distorting some facts now?. Kindly take a look at the years when they marked their products and compare the years with the year mark on the cuff links Y7=1976. None of the two your mentioning marked that year anymore.

Hi,
New member here.
I know this is an old thread, but I though that you might still be interested in knowing what these are.
I have no certain info on the maker, but my money is on Holger Lindström.
The emblem is for Metallityöväenliitto (Metal Worker's Union).
This must have been an item given to distinguished members of the union.
I have this same pair in my collection.
Due to the political content, I'd not wear them, but I find them a very cool and well made pair.
