Help Needed to Identify Marks & What the heck is it ????

Post by Mr. Jim »

hi Ya'all have been a great help in the past so I was hoping the same fine folks will see this.

I need to figure out the makers mark on this container The silver plate has worn off but I still have looked thru every book & website I can find & Can't match the marks.
I posted the best pictured I can if you need others let me know.
Also I can't figure out what the heck it would have been used for or the significance of the embossed images.
I'll desfribe it best I can; It's about 4" tall with the lid on, Oval Shaped 3.5" x 2.5"it looks like copper was pressed into a form of some sort to get the high releif pattern of a Party looks like they are wearing colonial
attire, image is the same on both sides seamed on the edges with solder The top fits loosly & has the image of a sailboat with one man in it.
Anybody know WHAT THE HECK THIS WAS USED FOR ??
Thanks for looking
Jim

I was looking at this website again & saw what may be the maker but I'm no sure. I thought the first letter was a "C" could it be an "E"? Could this be the mark that was used by E.G. Webster & Sons ? Can this mark be dated?

If so I still have no idea what it would be used for any clues
Thanks

Hello: I think you have a tea caddy there.
Used to keep loose tea fresh?

Hello.

Yes, that is an E.G. Webster & Son mark.
The firm became known as E.G. Webster & Son in 1886.
Sold to International silver in 1928 who continued to use their trademarks.
In 1963 the trademark was changed to Webster-Wilcox.
Can't provide a specific date for your tea caddy.
