Flask

Post by rdalyhome »

Hello,
I have this flask that I cannot determine it's origins. I searched this website with no success. I live in the Boston area so I thought it would be American Colonial. The base engravings appear to be military.

A post that's worth a bump.

Any thoughts?

Hello,
I think the "R" is the city mark from Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern / Northern Germany (Scheffler, Goldschmiede Mittel- und Nordostdeutschlands p. 311). There was a master Jochim Christoffer Möller who used a "ICM" mark, but in a rectangle (Scheffler p. 326). Möller began to work 1755, his widdow died 1801.

Kind regards,

I will leave the marks to others, but I guess I should point out the obvious. It is not a flask for liquids but a tea container or box. The inscription is not military but those of a husband and wife who at least considered themselves noble, and what looks like a later addition by one of their children.
