This is an interesting but a small object. It is meant for the dinner table, but what is it? The 2€ coin is only for comparison of the size.
In this case I know what it is, but what's your best guess?

Hi Qrt.S,
It is meant for your personal butter knife to prevent to smudge the table cloth with butter.You insert the end of the blade of your butter knife through the little groove.

Well done Oel. Yes, it's function is to prevent that butter stains appear on the table cloth.
