HI
What was this felt lined holder used for? Its hallmarked for Colen Hewer Cheshire, Birmingham 1893?

It appears to be an eye-glass case.

I was thinking that but it would need to be real thin & narrow glasses as the opening is only 3 Cm wide & 1 cm thick. & why would it need a chain?

It could have been used for a small lorngette, or however you spell that word.
A Lorngette is a pair of glasses used specifically for the opera.
Maybe you would need the chain so you could hang the lorngette holder on your coat while you watched the opera?

It would have hung from a chatelaine, holding small straight-armed spectacles - lorgnettes more often pivoted and/or folded into their handles.
