Silver Plate marks on Possible Christopher Dresser Kettle

Hi

I bought this kettle on tripod stand at a general sale yesterday, I hadn't spotted it as it was behind a big ugly reproduction coal scuttle, but my wife saw it and I bid without seeing it closely because she liked it so much! It has a few dents but is beautifully made. As I was collecting it a dealer asked if he could have a look and said he would be happy to buy it there and then, and that he hadn't noticed it or he would have been bidding for sure. He also suggested looking into it further as he thought it might be by Christopher Dresser.

I have tried to look up the marks on the base but they are a bit faded and I haven't had any luck. I assume it is silver plate, and Victorian, but beyond that I don't know?

If anyone can let me know what the marks mean, and if they think it is by Christopher Dresser i would greatly appreciate it :)

Hi David,

Welcome to the Forum.

The item is silver plated.

The maker was Martin, Hall & Co. (Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall) of Sheffield. The firm used several different marks, some can be seen here: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_M.html

I'm not aware of any connection between this firm and Dr. Christopher Dresser.

Trev.

Thanks. I had looked at Martin & Hall on one of the Silver plate marks site, but wasn't sure. Many thanks for confirming.
