Glasgow import hallmark

Post by constantinopolitan »

Friends,
Recently I bought a silver cased 1920s cushion shaped wristwatch. The first mystery about the watch is the silver case hallmarks. Hallmarks are as follows: Glasgow import mark, g date letter in cameo and DBS makers mark. Priestley's Watch case makers..., does not list Glasgow makers. But when I look at the London makers initials I simply found DBS mark belongs to Dimier Brothers (freres) and the period is matching with the style of my watch, on the other hand Dimier Brothers are registered to London essay office not Glasgow. So, I should question I wonder if they are registered to Glasgow essay office as well?
Your comments will be appreciated.
Regards,
Constantin

Gold and silver watches were imported to various areas of the UK and would have been assayed at the nearest office to the importer so it is quite concievable that the makers(who are possibly Swiss) had their items assayed at many UK offices .
Best wishes, Mike.

Dear Mike,

I agree with you. Meanwhile I looked at Priestley's Watch case makers again, there in Chester makers chapter I saw Dimier Brothers (Freres)-Swiss makers of good quality watches- were registered as DBS and DF&Co besides their registration to London assay office. Therefore, since there is no Glasgow makers are mentioned in Priestley's book, we can estimate Dimier Brothers might have also been registered to Glasgow assay office as DBs.
