Hopi overlay made by Gene Pooyouma?

Post by Murphy »

I found this pair of earrings at my local Goodwill. At first I just thought they were a pair of pretty 70s style earrings. When I got them home, I realized they had a makers mark, so I did some research.

They appear to be Hopi Overlay. The maker's mark is a sun with either a face or some other symbol inside it.

The part that fits next to the ear is marked 925. I think they were made by Gene Pooyouma, but I am not sure. Does anyone know? Or can you tell me what the design means? Is the design intended to represent a snake? Any information would be appreciated? Thank you.

A good possibility is Roderick Phillips (Hopi). He used a similar sun symbol. Began producing in 1972, specializes in silver overlay.
