What does the number mean under the hallmark

I know the Meriden Brittania Hallmark, I am just trying to identify what the 1662 signifies.

The production codes were not assigned sequentially, even if they were, it would only indicate the date first produced, later production would bear the same number - the style might give an idea of dating. Meriden didn't start production of sterling silver pieces until 1895/96, the mark shown was still in use by International Silver into at least the 1930s, possibly later, have seen many mid 20th century International pieces bearing the the eagle mark sans 'M'...
