800 silver snuff box. unrecognized hallmarks

Post by noamlip »

Please help me identify the hallmarks of my 800 silver snuff box. The 800 stamp is on the edge of the box, under the lid (not shown in the photos).

Hi Peter.
It looks completely the same.
So I guess I'll only know now that it was made in Hanau (no exact date or silversmith name).

Thank you again

I've found a similar box with a hallmark dating it to 1904. Does it help date my box?
That box has Chester 1904, Maurice Freeman's hallmark.

Yes your box was made around early 1900.

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for your information.
I'm interested to find out who made this box.
Do you have a clue?
I made another search and found another similar box (a little bigger but with a similar relief with figures)
that its hallmark shows Hanau, Georg Roth.
Does it show that the maker was Georg Roth, or can it be someone else's work?

No, you can't say that. So far we don't know which German silversmith or silversmiths used this characteristic set of pseudo hallmarks on Hanau style silverware, unfortunately.

Hi,

I believe your marks have been attributed to Hanau maker Gebruder Dingeldein. Please see this earlier post where the punches that made your three marks were found in the possession of his descendants.

Hi Steve, thanks for the reminder. I'm going to ask if we can update the Hanau Pseudo Hallmarks page, this will take some time.

Cheers,

Peter.

Hi Steve, Thank you for your contribution to my small research.

Do you know a Gebruder Dingeldein piece similar to my snuff/pill box?
In terms of attributes, besides the hallmarks?
