Help With Maker's Mark on Hatpin

Hi

First visit so hope I am doing this right.

I am trying to trace the maker's mark on a small hatpin. The pin itself is about 3 inches long, on top is a design of a musical Clef about 1 inch long. The Clef is stamped Sterling with the maker's mark C.H in a cartouche. The dot between the C and the H is actually halfway up the letters - not at the bottom as shown here.

I have checked books and websites but can find nothing.

Many thanks for any help.

It sounds very much as if the mark is that of Charles Horner of Halifax, Yorkshire, England.

Hi Carling

Thanks very much for the reply. Charles Horner was my first thought but the full stop between the C and the H put me off - I didn't think that Charles Horner had this (especially as on this hatpin it is halfway up the letters).

Kind regards

Hi Pam,

The Charles Horner company registered a variety of different marks throughout its history including several with a centre pellet. I just counted 17 different styles of the CH mark (not including the well known intertwined trademark) in Maurice H. Ridgway and Philip T. Priestley, The Compendium of Chester Gold & Silver Marks 1570 to 1962 (Woodbridge: The Antique Collectors’ Club, 2004).

Hi Carling

Thank you very much indeed for all your help - I did not realise there were so many variations on the Charles Horner mark.

Kind regards
