What is this "thing" used for? Hint: Please do not say ashtray. Also note that the upper part is pierced.

Not the first one to show up here - as said, it's a butter curler/serving dish, you pack some butter into the underside of the pierced part and push it up with the domed piece, then refrigerate until ready to serve, some have a little cup for ice that goes underneath.

Looks like there is no more "guessing". Yes both Amena and Cheryl are right, that is exactly what it is. Nice doing both
