Dutch Silver Box - Help With ID Please

Post by andrewshane »

Hello all. I recently purchased this little Dutch silver box. It measures 3" x 2" x 2". On the inside of the lid and the rim of the box are the tax stamp in a script I. What I do not know and cannot seem to find is a reference to the other stamp in the Dutch section of this sight. I also cannot find it in Tardy's book. I do not have any other references on Dutch silver so I thought I would post it here. It looks to me like it is two characters, with the one on the right being a bird of some type and I cannot make out the one on the left. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Andrew,

Perhaps a long haul but could the deformed mark on your box be the maker’s mark for Johannes Martinus Steiger. Please be the judge: http://i.imagehost.org/0728/silver_forum.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The duty mark next to the maker’s mark for unguaranteed standard of fineness silver objects of national origin. It was also struck on rejected objects which has been submitted at lowest standard of fineness. In that case the maker had to choose between destruction or ‘unguaranteed’marking. Used 1853-1859 valid till 1953

Best wishes,

Oel
