Hi Andrew,
Perhaps a long haul but could the deformed mark on your box be the maker’s mark for Johannes Martinus Steiger. Please be the judge:

The duty mark next to the maker’s mark for unguaranteed standard of fineness silver objects of national origin. It was also struck on rejected objects which has been submitted at lowest standard of fineness. In that case the maker had to choose between destruction or ‘unguaranteed’marking. Used 1853-1859 valid till 1953
Best wishes,
Oel
